One of the 10 world changing green trend proposed by entrepreneur.com, is rising the green bar. What that means? that means how high or low is the knowledge and standards regarding sustainability issues among businesses and individuals, and certainly today the green bar is below it should be, I think. Why? because over the time we have grown in many areas such as technology, transportation, education, knowledge, among others and we live in this era when everybody knows about everything, but what everybody know or the majority of people know about environment and sustainability is what we have learned in high school…hopefully. I never heard during my career as a Mechanical Engineer, how to be a green responsible engineer or how to be a green entrepreneur or even worst, how to treat solid waste. Sounds out of place but just as an example of lack of knowledge, every single place that you visit in my home country you will find for sure different standards in how to separate the solid waste, or the garbage. Some places you can find 3 garbage baskets with different colors trying to teach you how to separate them. But in the same day you visit another place and you find that they have 5 different baskets with another color code and explanation. Finally you arrive home and you just have ONE basket…sadly we don’t have idea how to do it…I mean, is not clear. But anyways, that is not what I was talking about, the great thing here is that this article that I read, says that those standards that environmental certification provides will not stand still over time. What is green today will not be green tomorrow, trends and standards will evolve over time. I have never been so agreed with something and so glad seen this kind of articles. However today the bar is relatively low as businesses and people start to consider sustainability as something essential in our lives.

The challenge proposed by entrepreneur.com to companies and businesses is to keep innovating…..Again, creativity and innovation, words that I clearly support in order to succeed and being competitive in today’s changing world. But not only that, those concepts become essential tools to develop effective solutions in our environmental recovery battle.

Since I don’t know how many years ago, the need for the people transportation has become one of the biggest businesses around the world. Exist many channels that supply this need in many industries. The example that I want to take today is the rental car business. It is a millionaire business today mainly in US, every time that you want to travel within United States, you think in renting a car and moreover in all features that they offer to make your stay in United States easier and more comfortable.

What make all the process even more comfortable is the website that they have. Since the moment that you think in traveling you can calculate your costs of transportation in those company’s web sites. For example Hertz is one of the most recognized in the market and has a super complete web site with prices information, cars, pick up and drop off places, and so on. This web site really works because first is easy to use, the information is pretty much clear, the font sizes and the frameworks are well located, and the information is available at a very low amount of clicks. Second, the web structure that they have, drives to the customer through each step covering each single need that a traveler or a family traveling would need, offering gps, neverlost, insurances, gas service, kids chairs, among others. Finally, they have a follow up by social networks very strong, they answer any kind of inquiries by Twitter immediately and promote seasonal offers and discounts through it.

Hertz is described by many blogs as one of the best experiences in customer service ever, they are totally customer oriented and their differentiator relies on taking care of the customer along the whole renting process. In certain way, I consider that if a rental car company has a Twitter account, is because they really want to have a more direct relationship with it customers and offer a more personalized service instead avoid critics and real time problems that this kind of services can bring up, that’s so good.

To conclude I just want to add that one of the features that most like me in Hertz website is that they offer hybrid cars; this is real social responsibility and environmental commitment. They know that its environmental impact is huge, but they try to compensate in certain way. Could be not good enough to many of you but I believe that try to do something even small is also acceptable. Good for Hertz, Web presence and Green commitment!

The web evolution has been amazing; each new step in the growth of the web is more and more innovative and sometimes extremely engaging. Well, I think that innovation is exactly what is everything about, putting nods together and generate new ideas with that powerful tool called creativity. I am pretty sure that the next challenge on web presence is exactly that, innovation. Over the last 25 years we have been impressed by the extremely cool tools that the web and Internet has given us at a very fast pace and after one or two months of usage it become one more gadget in our lives. For example, I remember that the first tool to virtually communicate with others was chat software called ICQ. By that moment it was crazy thinking about have communication with others by instant messages, but now we have at least three different chat applications running 24/7 (Blackberry chat, Whatsapp, Skype, Facebook chat, etc), is almost impposible not find somebody at any given moment during the day.

Another tool that the Internet gave us is the search engine. I remember when I got Internet access at the very beginning, that I was used to a search engine that you probably remember called altavista.com. Today, we have search engines even inside many web sites ( as I mentioned in my last blog post) and for example Google, by tracking your location and your current search topics, customize the results to your needs or web behaviors. Not only that, they also offer a wide product portfolio such as images, maps, videos, mail, statistics in only one tool.

The basis could be the same, but with different connections between the nods that the Internet has created and strongly improved over the years. That is why I strongly believe that the biggest challenge to web developers or businesses that have any web presence, is innovate, is stun bunches of people around the world with very single but useful gadgets or tools or even products, not only once, is a long task to keep those users engaged with your innovation ability.

Can you imagine that you could post an image in the search engine and it find what that image means just as Shazam does it by listening your favorite music? Or even better, imagine a video call you could touch and feel the other person?

Yes, innovation is the challenge.
